Generating Documentation

Generating Report with and without Update
All the information for the documentation is stored in a data set named _DEFINE which is which is located in the output library.  The information is gathered from the input datasets and also updated and edited by the user.  The data definition documentation can be generated by clicking on the "Generate" button.  In this case, no updates will be performed on the _DEFINE dataset.  Updates occur through the editing or refreshing process of the definition.

The output is specified in the "Output File" parameter in the following format.

  • XLS - Excel spreadsheet used to edit and re-imported for documentation
  • RTF - Rich text format which can be read into MSWord
  • PDF - Standard DEFINE.PDF format
  • XML - XML along with accompanying style sheet is produced

It is optional to generate a blank Excel spreadsheet to be able to enter values from scratch.  In this case, you can specify the file BLANK.XLS.  The new files will contain the proper header.  After this spreadsheet has been filled out, it can be re-imported back to Definedoc via the import button.
